WHAT IS SHAREPOINT: Microsoft SharePoint is a web application platform associated with web content management and document management systems capable of being configured into a wide range of solution areas. SharePoint is designed as a broad, central application platform for common enterprise web requirements. It’s multi-purpose design allows for managing and provisioning of intranet portals (sites accessible only from within your company network), websites, document & file management, collaboration spaces, enterprise search, workflow automation, and the core infrastructure is also suited to providing a base technology platform for custom developed applications. SharePoint is essentially a network based resource for you company to host it’s important information and make it accessible to the entire organisation irrelevant of physical location. It provides secure access to sensitive information, allows collaboration between employees and real time communication. SharePoint can be implemented in many different ways to maximise it’s benefit to your organization. SharePoint On-Premise – SharePoint is an application that is usually installed on a server, owned by the organization and configured by the company’s IT provider to provide the services listed above. Having an On-Premise solution does provide more control and ownership but can come with higher up front costs in both software and hardware. Sharepoint Online - SharePoint technology can now be delivered as an online service making the power of the cloud work for your organization. SharePoint Online is part of the Microsoft Office 365 cloud product. SharePoint Workspaces – is a client program installed on a local PC that works with SharePoint server to provide access to information when the worker is no longer connected to the internal company SharePoint site! Documents included in the workspace can be updated or new documents upload to the workspace which will then synchronize with the main sharePoint site when the network connection is reestablished. |
